Processing ⁄ Java ⁄ Receipt Printer
R.I.P. is an interactive installation reinterpreting a form of public documentation, and the relationship between our memories and the public. Participants are invited to answer a randomly picked question about an important moment in their life (for example: “Write your own eulogy in 100 characters or less” or “Write the worst thing you’ve ever done in 100 characters or less”). They are asked to encode their answer by swapping letters for the printout. The message is printed on thermal paper, a throwaway medium in our culture.
The installation runs on a combination of Processing for the visual interface and several custom Java libraries to communicate with the printer over a USB serial port.
